Mineral Commodities

Mineral commodities and opportunities

The Northern Territory hosts some of the largest mines and mineral deposits in the world. Currently mined world-class deposits include: manganese on Groote Eylandt; bauxite at Gove; lead-zinc-silver at the McArthur Mine near Borroloola; gold at Callie in the Tanami; and uranium at the Ranger Mine near Jabiru. The Northern Territory also contains significant deposits of copper, diamonds, tin, tantalum, vermiculite, magnesite, cobalt, iron ore and rare earths. The total value of mineral products for the Northern Territory was $1,458 M in 2002/03, representing 13% of the Gross State Product (GSP).

NTGS has compiled reports on a number of mineral commodities within the Northern Territory, providing insights into their geological setting, mineralogy, metallogeny, production and resources. For copies of these reports, available free-of-charge, contact the Information Centre.
